Pigeon Island Marine National Park, a short boat ride from Nilaveli on Sri Lanka’s northeast coast, stands out as a premier snorkeling destination. Calm, crystal-clear waters and vibrant coral reefs create a haven for diverse marine life within this marine sanctuary.
Snorkeling Experience
The shallow reef on Pigeon Island’s south side is perfect for snorkelers. Here, you can easily spot reef sharks, turtles, and a variety of fish. The “Shark Area” on the main island, a protected zone marked with buoy lines, lets you observe juvenile and adult Black Tip Reef Sharks in their natural habitat. Respecting the boundaries of this area is vital to provide the sharks with space to thrive. Besides sharks, snorkelers might encounter tropical fish like parrotfish, angelfish, and butterflyfish. Lucky visitors may also see Green Sea Turtles and Hawksbill Sea Turtles.
Planning Your Visit
March to October is the ideal time to visit Pigeon Island for snorkeling. During these months, calm seas offer excellent underwater visibility. Snorkeling trips usually last about 3 hours, including the boat ride. Boats typically depart from the Nilaveli Diving Centre. Booking your trip at least two days in advance is recommended. Snorkeling gear is usually provided, but confirm with the tour operator.
Snorkeling vs. Diving
Scuba diving is possible on the island’s north side where it’s deeper. However, snorkeling is often a better choice for Pigeon Island. The shallow reef on the south side offers easy access to see sharks and turtles.
The island has limited facilities, mainly a small beach with some trees for shade. Ropes mark the snorkeling area to indicate safe zones for snorkelers and marine life. Come prepared to protect the reef! Do not stand on the coral or disturb marine life. By respecting the underwater environment, you can help preserve the beauty of Pigeon Island for future generations of snorkelers and sea creatures alike.
